Ancient landmark is now a mere memory

Tying branches so they grew in a curved pattern was a method of marking trails by First Nations travellers

Many Thorold residents remember the ancient Native Trail Marker that once stood at the corner of Thorold Townline Road and Old Thorold Stone Road.

The Niagara Falls Library noted, "The famous elm tree used as a trail marker by natives was ravaged by Dutch elm disease in 1970 and the following year many of its branches were taken off as a safety hazard. It was blown down in a wind storm on Dec. 28, 1982."

Today, the corner is occupied by a Niagara Region fleet garage.
