On Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, members of the Niagara Regional Police conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks within the cities of Thorold and St. Catharines.

Throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 650 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening.  In total, 27 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis.  Two of the drivers provided a sample resulting in an “alert” and subsequently had their licences suspended for a period of three days.

In addition to two roadside suspensions, two other drivers were arrested and charged with operation while prohibited, when it was discovered that they were suspended drivers for previous criminal code convictions.  Both of these drivers were charged with the offence and had their vehicles towed and impounded for a period of 45 days.

Several tickets were also issued to drivers for various traffic-related offences.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program
