Two from Niagara charged in Burlington armed robbery

Two people from the Niagara Region are facing charges in an armed robbery in Burlington.

Halton Regional Police were called to a Royal Bank branch at 3030 Mainway at around 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Two suspects had fled the scene in a vehicle, but officers found them nearby.

“One suspect was immediately taken into custody, however the second suspect remained in the vehicle and in possession of a firearm,” Halton Police had said in a news release.

“Police began negotiations which were successful. The second suspect has been taken into custody. “

Michael Uzelac, 37, of Welland has been charged with:

  • Occupant of a Motor Vehicle Knowing there was a Firearm
  • Armed Robbery Using a Firearm
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000

Stephane Smith, 54, of Niagara Falls has been charged with:

  • Armed Robbery Using a Firearm
  • Utter Threat to Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Firearm – Use While Committing an Offence
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle 

Both accused have been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
