Thorold driver facing impaired and drug charges after crash in St. Catharines

Two people were taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries

On April 28, 2020, at approximately  8:10 p.m. emergency services personnel were called to a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Glendale Avenue and Glenridge Avenue in St. Catharines.

1 District St. Catharines uniform officers arrived on scene to find three vehicles damaged, one of which was on its side.

The investigation determined that a grey Buick Allure entered the intersection colliding with a grey Chevrolet Cruse and a white Subaru Outback.

All three vehicles were damaged. The damage to the Subaru was extensive. The adult female driver of the Subaru and the child passenger were transported by Niagara EMS paramedics to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

All three vehicles were towed from the scene. 

Joseph Matthews (33 years old) of Thorold, the driver of the Buick Allure was arrested at the scene. At the time of his arrest he was found to be in possession of suspected Fentanyl.

Matthews has been charged with the alleged criminal offences of:

  • Operate conveyance impaired by drug - Sec. 320.14(1)(a) CC
  • Possession of a schedule I substance – Fentanyl - Sec 4(1) CDSA

Matthews has been issued an Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS). The ADLS, is issued to everyone charged with similar driving offences. The ADLS prohibits him from operating a motor vehicle for 90 days from date it was issued.

Matthews has been released on a Form 10 - Undertaking with a future court date of May 22, 2020, at the Robert S. K. Welch Court House in St. Catharines.
