On Friday, Nov. 1, members of the Niagara Regional Police conducted a R.I.D.E. checkpoint within the City of St. Catharines.

Throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 150 vehicles and questioned the drivers regarding any alcohol or drug consumption prior to driving. A total of seven drivers were requested to provide a sample of their breath for analysis.

One driver registered a "Fail" and was subsequently arrested for impaired driving. Two other drivers provided samples in the warning range and subsequently lost their licence for a period of three days.

Another driver approached the R.I.D.E. checkpoint and turned around once they noticed the police. An officer nearby spotted the vehicle turn around and conducted a traffic stop to investigate further.  It was discovered that there was a stolen licence plate attached to the vehicle and the driver was operating the vehicle with a suspended licence.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
