Standoff in Pelham leads to multiple charges

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, 3 District (Welland) uniform officers were called to a home in the area of Pelham Street and Spruceside Crescent in the Town of Pelham over the report of a disturbance.

When officers arrived, they encountered a male barricaded with weapons inside the home.

Members of the Emergency Task Unit, negotiators, canine, 3 District Criminal Investigations Branch, Traffic Enforcement Unit as well as uniform members from across the Niagara Region were brought in to contain and resolve the situation while residents in nearby homes were evacuated or sheltered in place.

During the incident a firearm was discharged within the home in the direction of responding officers.

Following lengthy negotiations, at approximately 11:40 p.m., the male was taken into custody without incident. No injuries were sustained during this incident.

Michael Roosma, 29, of Pelham is facing the following alleged charges:

- Pointing a firearm

- Uttering threats death/bodily harm

- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose

- Two counts of discharge firearm with intent

Roosma is currently being held in custody pending a bail hearing via video on Sunday at the John Sopinka Courthouse in the City of Hamilton.
