Seaway Mall robbed at gunpoint, Port Colborne man arrested

On Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, at approximately 2:20 p.m. uniform officers from the 3 District – Welland office of the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a commercial robbery at a jewelry store in Welland.

Officers attended the Peoples Jewellers located inside the Seaway Mall for a report of an armed robbery. The investigation determined that a lone man had entered the store and requested to try on jewlery. The suspect then displayed a handgun towards a store employee and fled with the jewlery.

It was determined that lone suspect left the area driving a silver Ford Taurus.

A short time later the suspect car was the subject of a driving complaint by a member of the public in Niagara Falls.

3 District detectives investigating this matter located the suspect vehicle in a hotel parking lot in the area of the Lundy's Lane and the Queen Elizabeth Highway in Niagara Falls.

The room where the suspect was staying was contained by 2 District – Niagara Falls uniform officers. The NRPS Emergency Task Unit and Crisis Negotiators were called in to assist with the arrest. The male suspect and a female were arrested without incident when they exited the room.

The female has been released unconditionally without charge; after it was determined she did not have a role in the robbery.

Brandon Jake Raymond Zimmerman (27 years old) of Port Colborne is charged with the alleged Criminal Code of Canada offences of:

  • Robbery with a firearm, contrary to section 343(d)
  • Fail to comply with recognizance of Bail, contrary to Section 145(3)
  • Fail to Comply with Probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1)
  • Possession of a weapon contrary to a weapons Prohibition Order, section 117.01(1)

The hotel room where Zimmerman was located is being held pending the execution of a search warrant.

Zimmerman was held in custody for a video bail hearing at the Robert S. K. Welch courthouse in St. Catharines on February 4, 2020.
