Port Colburne man faces historic sexual assault charges

Police believe members of the public may have further information and are asking them to come forward

In November of 2019, detectives with the Niagara Regional Police Sexual Assault Unit (SAU) commenced an investigation into allegations of a historic sexual assault.

The investigation has revealed that between 2009 - 2011 a male under the age of 16 was allegedly sexually assaulted in the City of Welland by an adult male.

On Wednesday, March 11, 2020, detectives arrested a 64-year-old male as a result of this investigation.

Sixty-four-year-old Gerard Thibault of the Town of Port Colborne is facing the following alleged charges:

  • Three counts of sexual assault contrary to Section 271 of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Three counts of sexual interference contrary to section 151 of the Criminal Code of Canada

Thibault is currently being held in custody pending a bail hearing on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in the City of St. Catharines.

Through the course of the investigation, detectives have reason to believe that members of the public may have further information in relation to the alleged offense and ask them to contact detectives at (905) 688-4111, dial option 3, Badge # 9359.  

Thibault has not been tried as of yet and is presumed innocent until convicted by a court.
