Police investigate break and enter, assault at St. Catharines apartment

On Jan. 18, 2021, at approximately 8:53am 1 District – St. Catharines uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) were called to a multi-unit apartment building in the area of Manchester Avenue and Hampstead Avenue in St. Catharines for a break and enter and assault.

Officers attended the scene and met with a female victim. The initial investigation found the victim had been asleep in her apartment.  She was awoken to find a man had entered the apartment. The suspect physically assaulted the victim. In the subsequent struggle, the victim was able to scratch the suspect in the face near his eyes. The victim ran from the apartment to a neighbour, where 911 was called.

The suspect also ran from the scene. It is believed the suspect forced open a sliding door to gain entry.

The victim received minor injuries. There is no allegation of sexual assault.

The male suspect was described as:

  • male white, 30-40 years old
  • heavy set
  • 5’2 - 5'6 feet tall
  • black hoodie
  • black gloves
  • light coloured jeans
  • white low cut shoes

The identity of the suspect is unknown.

The investigation has been assigned to detectives from the 1 District Detective Office. The detective’s are being assisted by the NRPS Forensic Services Unit.  Anyone who may have information about this incident is being asked to call 905-688-4111, extension 1009482.
