On Saturday, March 16, 2019, members of the Niagara Regional Police conducted R.I.D.E. checkpoints within the Cities of St. Catharines and Thorold in relation to the St. Patrick's Day Celebrations.
In total, more than 600 vehicles entered the checkpoints and each of the drivers were questioned regarding any consumption of alcohol or drugs prior to driving.
Officers were glad to see that there were a high number of designated drivers and only a handful of drivers admitted to consuming alcohol. As a result, 10 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath into an approved screening device. Among these drivers, two provided samples that resulted in an immediate suspension of their licence, for one of which it was the second time that their breath sample was within the suspension range, resulting in a seven-day suspension.
In addition to the alcohol screening, officers enforced various driving offences and issued 11 provincial offence notices, five warnings, and one notice of suspension to a driver.
Motorists are also reminded that they are required by law to slow down and proceed cautiously when approaching a R.I.D.E. checkpoint or any emergency vehicle stopped on the roadway.
The Niagara Regional Police remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E.
Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.
This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of their Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
