The Niagara Regional Police Service's commitment to road safety continued on Friday, April 19, during the Easter holiday long weekend, as officers conducted a RIDE campaign in the City of Niagara Falls.

During the course of the evening, officers stopped approximately 500 vehicles and questioned the drivers regarding any alcohol or drug consumption prior to driving. A total of eight drivers were requested to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. Of those tested, one driver provided a sample in the warning range and subsequently lost their licence for a three days.

In addition to the three-day suspension, officers issued several tickets to drivers for various traffic offences. A total of 19 tickets were issued, including two drivers who were charged with driving while under suspension and another was charged for driving with no licence.

Officers also had an occasion to stop a driver when it was discovered that there was an expired validation sticker on his licence plate. When he was asked to provide identification, he stated he did not have any and then provided a false name. Upon further checks, police revealed that the driver was prohibited from driving as a result of a criminal charge. He was subsequently charged and had his vehicle towed and impounded for 45 days.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like RIDE. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program.
