Male driver still in serious condition after head-on crash in Niagara-on-the-Lake

July 30 1:15 p.m. update

The investigation into this collision remains ongoing by detectives from the Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Their investigation thus far has determined that on July 29, 2020, at approximately 2:50 p.m. a brown Chevrolet Caprice was being driven north/west on Niagara Stone Road by a 32-year-old male from Niagara on the Lake.

The Chevrolet lost control and collided head on with a silver Porsche being driven by a 60-year-old female from Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Porsche was being driven in the opposite direction. The collision took place on Niagara Stone Road near Eastchester Avenue.

The female was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The male was transported directly to a helipad in St. Catharines and transported to an out of region hospital where he remains in serious condition.

The identity of the deceased is not being released at the request of the next kin.

July 29 original release

On July 29, 2020, at approximately 2:50 p.m. emergency services personnel responded to a report of a serious injury collision on Niagara Stone Road in Niagara on the Lake.

2 District (Niagara Falls) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) arrived on scene in the area of Niagara Stone Road at Eastchester Avenue.  The initial investigation determined that two cars had been involved in a head on collision. 

Paramedics from Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) and members of the Niagara on the Lake Fire Service attended to the two people involved in the collision. 

The driver of one of the cars was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the second car was transported from the scene by paramedics with critical injuries to a local hospital. The second driver was then transported to an out of region hospital by an Ornge air ambulance helicopter.

Niagara Stone Road is closed from Stewart Road to Airport Road, while the collision is under investigation by detectives from the NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit. The road closures will likely be in effect into the evening. Members of the public are asked to find alternative routes.

The Reconstruction Unit detectives are being assisted by detectives from the Forensic Services Unit and officer's from the Traffic Enforcement Unit.

More details will be provided once the next of kin notifications have been completed and the matter has been investigated further by detectives.
