Woman dies when car crashes through building. Driver charged with impaired

30-year-old St. Catharines man faces several charges

On Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, at approximately 11:57 a.m. the Niagara Regional Police Service, St. Catharines Fire and the Niagara Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of a single motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Niagara Street and Maple Street in the City of St. Catharines within the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Ont.

Initial investigation revealed that a 2012 Ford Fiesta motor vehicle was being driven southbound on Niagara Street by a 30-year-old St. Catharines male. The driver lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and collided into a building at this intersection striking a 59-year-old Hamilton female inside the business.

The female was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to the injuries suffered in the collision.

Police arrested and charged the driver, Jamie Burns with the following offences:

  • Impaired operation causing death
  • Dangerous operation causing death
  • Operation while prohibited
  • Take motor vehicle without consent

This collision remains under investigation by Detectives of the Niagara Regional Police Services Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact investigators at (905) 688-4111, ext. 5500.
