A man is dead after the vehicle he was driving the wrong way on the 406 collided head-on with a tractor trailer.

For the third time since construction began, the accident is the result of a driver going the wrong way on the area that is down to a single lane in each direction.

This morning, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt tweeted that a 54-year-old Welland man had died after going the wrong way.

He said the driver of the tractor trailer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Schmidt also noted that "speed, alcohol and drugs are being looked at as possible contributing factors."

The collision near Beaverdams Road this morning had the highway closed for several hours but it has now re-opened.
