Explosive Disposal Unit called to investigate 'suspicious object' at Niagara hospital

On July 25, 2019 at approximately 9:30 a.m. uniform officers from the 2 District (Niagara Falls) office of the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) were contacted by security personnel at Greater Niagara General Hospital.

Security personnel had located a suspicious object in a court yard on the grounds of the hospital. As a result of the initial investigation by responding officers the NRPS Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was requested to attend the scene to investigate the matter further.

Out of an abundance of safety there was a partial evacuation of the hospital. Patients and staff in the immediate vicinity of the suspicious object were moved to known safe areas of the hospital. The Emergency Department remained open.

A number of roads were closed in the area and Niagara Falls Fire Service and Niagara Emergency Medical Services were asked to stand by in the area.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., as a result of the investigation by EDU members the object was determined to be safe and not a threat to public safety.

Roads in the area and the hospital have returned to normal operation.

The investigation remains ongoing as officer's attempt to identify the source of the object, however investigators believe there was no criminal intent.
