Explosive Disposal Unit among responders to disturbance call

A Niagara Falls man faces assault and weapons charges

At approximately 9:45 p.m. on Monday Oct. 14, 2019 2 District (Niagara Falls) uniform officers were called to a residence in the area of Drummond Rd and Barker Street following the report of a disturbance.

Initial investigation by uniform officers and the K9 Unit located two suspicious devices, which prompted the response of the Emergency Task Unit and Explosive Disposal Unit out of an abundance of caution.

A residence was secured by uniform officers while the investigation continued.

A subsequent investigation involving members of the Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) resulted in the arrest of a male.

On Wednesday Oct. 16, 2019, with the assistance of the Explosive Disposal Unit, investigators executed a search warrant at the residence. No additional safety risks have been identified and the scene has since been released.

The 34-year-old male of the City of Niagara Falls is facing the following alleged charges:

  • Assault s.266 Criminal Code (Count One)
  • Possession of prohibited weapon s.92(2 )X3
  • Unlawful possession of explosives s.82(1)

The male is currently being held in custody pending a bail hearing on Wednesday Oct. 16, 2019 at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in the City of St. Catharines via video link.

As this is being investigated as an incident of domestic violence, the name of the accused will not be released in the interest of protecting the identity of the victim.
