Driver charged with impaired following crash that trapped woman in her car

Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers arrested a man following a collision in Niagara Falls for impaired driving.

On November 19, 2019 at approximately 5:10 a.m., uniform officers from the 2 District Niagara Falls office of the NRPS responded to a report of a two vehicle motor vehicle collision in the area of Thorold Stone Road and Beechwood Road in Niagara Falls.

Officers arrived on scene to find the two vehicles had left the roadway and came to rest in the adjacent field. The vehicles, a silver Chrysler Pacifica and a grey for Ford Focus both were damaged extensively.

The investigation determined both vehicles had been traveling west bound on Thorold Stone Road when the Chrysler Pacifica reared ended the Ford Focus. The driver of a Ford was trapped in the wreckage, requiring the assistance of the Niagara Falls Fire Service to get of the car. That driver, a 61-year-old woman form Niagara Falls was transported by Niagara Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital with what is believed to be minor injuries. The other driver was uninjured.

As a result of the investigation, the driver of the Chrysler Pacifica, Zhe Cao (24 years old) of St. Catharines was arrested at the scene.

Zhe Cao is charged with alleged criminal offences of:
    •    Impaired operation of a conveyance / motor vehicle
    •    Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
    •    Impaired operation conveyance / motor vehicle exceed BAC

Cao was held in custody pending a release on a Promise to Appear with a court date of Dec. 13, 2019 at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines.
