NEWS RELEASE
NIAGARA REGION POLICE SERVICE
**************************
With the holiday season almost upon us, officers from the Niagara Regional Police will be out conducting extra enforcement while looking for drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs. Residents in Niagara can expect to see officers at several scheduled R.I.D.E. checkpoints throughout the holiday season until early January.

On Friday, Nov. 15, members of the Niagara Regional Police conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks within the Cities of Welland and Niagara Falls. Officers stopped approximately 300 vehicles and questioned the drivers regarding any alcohol or drug consumption prior to operating their vehicles.

In total 16 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. One driver provided a sample over the legal limit and was subsequently arrested.  This driver had their vehicle seized and driver's licence suspended for seven days. The remaining drivers provided samples within the acceptable range and were free to drive away.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
