On July 31, 2019 at approximately 4:30 p.m., our 2 District Niagara Falls uniform officers were called to a residence on Basswood Crescent near Mayfair Drive in the city of Niagara Falls for a report of man in crisis.
Officers arrived on scene and requested the assistance of our Emergency Task Unit (ETU) and Crisis Negotiators. Officers had received credible information that firearms may be within the residence.
The residence was contained by the officers. Some residents in the immediate area of the residence were evacuated or asked to shelter in place in their homes.
At approximately 7:20 p.m. after speaking with the Crisis Negotiators, the 42-year-old man surrendered peacefully. He was apprehended under the Mental Health Act of Ontario and was transported to an area hospital for further care.
Detectives from the 2 District Criminal Investigations Branch continued the investigation. Their investigation resulted in the seizure of multiple firearms and ammunition due to an ongoing concern for safety.
