Conductive energy weapon deployed on suspected impaired driver in Welland

Police say the 39-year-old became combative when officers were placing him under arrest

At approximately 4:20 p.m. on Sunday May 10, 2020 3 District (Welland) uniform officers were called to the area of Niagara Street and 6th Street in the City of Welland regarding a suspected impaired driver.

When officers arrived they located a male in the drivers seat of a parked vehicle. While officers were placing him under arrest, he became combative and an altercation ensued during which a conducted energy weapon (CEW) was deployed.

The male as well as an officer were transported to hospital with minor injuries where they were treated and released.

39-year-old Jason Baldwin of Welland is facing the following alleged charges:

  • Assault with intent to resist arrest 270(1)(b) C.C.
  • Assault peace officer 270(1)(a) C.C.
  • Disarm peace officer 270.1(1) C.C.
  • Disobey order of the courts 127(1)C.C.]

Baldwin was released from custody with a future court date in relation to the charges.
