Charges laid after BB gun shots fired at group of teens

A 19-year-old from Welland has been charged following the Aug. 25 incident

On Aug. 25, 2020, at approximately 7:05 p.m., 3 District (Welland) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), responded to a weapons call in the area of Colbeck Drive and Stormm Court, in the City of Welland.

Initial investigation revealed that at approximately 6:55 p.m. a group of five youths, between the ages of 14-15 years old, were walking northbound on Colbeck Drive. A northbound minivan drove past the group.  As the van drove by one of the three people in the van opened fire on the group of youths with a replica firearm (also known as an Airsoft). 

One of the youths was struck with a BB but was not injured. The rear window of a nearby unrelated parked car was shattered.

On Sept., 14, 2020, the suspect was arrested.

Justin Maurice (19 years old) of Welland, Ontario, was arrested and charged with the alleged following offence of:

  • Accessory after the fact to an indictable offence

Maurice has been held for a bail hearing which will take place on Sept. 15, 2020 at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse, located at 59 Church Street in the City of St. Catharines.
