Arrest made in connection to Welland robbery

Police say the suspect entered a pharmacy and demanded narcotics while pointing a gun

On Friday, Feb. 19, 2021, at approximately 11:17 a.m., 3 District (Welland) uniform officers, the Emergency Task Unit and the K9 unit with the Niagara Regional Police Service, attended the Rexall Pharmacy, located at 399 King Street, in the City of Welland in response to a robbery.

Investigation revealed an unknown male had entered the store, demanding narcotics while pointing a gun. The suspect fled the scene on foot prior to police arrival.

PSD Kona and his handler attended the scene and were able to get a successful track. As a result, PSD Kona was led to a residence in the area of First Street and King Street, in the City of Welland where the suspect was located.

Joshua S. Shoup (31 years old) of Welland, was arrested and charged with the following offences of:

  • Robbery with an imitation firearm
  • Disguise with intent
  • Point firearm (two counts)
  • Utter death threat

Shoup was held in custody pending a bail hearing that is expected to take place on Feb. 19, 2021.

There were no injuries as a result of the robbery.
