NEWS RELEASE
NIAGARA REGIONAL POLICE
*******************************
On Saturday, Sept. 28, members of the Niagara Regional Police set up two R.I.D.E checkpoints throughout the region to ensure that motorists were not driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs. One checkpoint was established in Niagara Falls and a second was set up in St. Catharines near the Grape and Wine Festival.

Officers stopped approximately 480 vehicles and nine motorists were asked to provide a breath sample. All motorists who provided a breath sample were found to be within the appropriate range and released on scene. As a result, no charges were laid. Throughout the evening and early morning officers also issued three Provincial Offence Notices for various traffic-related offences.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remain committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
