23-year-old charged after dog dies of injuries

Police say the six-year-old Chihuahua died in Welland of suspected deliberate injuries

At approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2020 3 District (Welland) uniform officers were called to a home in the area of Southworth Street South and McCabe Avenue in the City of Welland following the report of a dog that had been allegedly deliberately injured.

When officers arrived, they were met by a 17-year-old female with her six-year-old Chihuahua who was badly injured.

The dog died shortly after officers arrived. A 23-year-old male had fled the scene prior to police arrival was but arrested a short distance away.

Twenty-three-year-old Liam Nyland is facing the following charges:
    •    Cause unnecessary suffering to an animal - Section 445(1)(a) Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Fail to comply with recognizance of Bail - Section 145(5)(a)Criminal Code of Canada

Nyland was held in custody pending a bail hearing via video at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in the City of St. Catharines on Monday, June 1, 2020.
