It is with great sorrow that the Anglican Diocese of Niagara announces the death of the Right Reverend Clarence Malcolm Mitchell, retired suffragan bishop, on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at the age of 94.

“Bishop Clarence was a faithful and dedicated servant with a special heart for our shared musical language of the church,” said the Right Reverend Susan Bell, the current Bishop of Niagara. “His commitment to and encouragement of lay leaders is remembered fondly and appreciatively by those whom he influenced across the church.”

Bishop Mitchell served in parishes in Welland, St. Catharines, Burlington, Hamilton, and Guelph before being consecrated to serve as a suffragan bishop for the diocese of Niagara on June 8, 1980.

A service celebrating his life and ministry will take place on Saturday, December 28 at 11am at St. Paul’s, Port Dover, 302 St George Street. The Right Reverend Susan Bell will preside and the Right Reverend Ralph Spence will preach. Visitation will take place on Friday, December 27 from 7-9pm at Thompson Waters Funeral Home in Port Dover.

The diocese extends its deepest sympathy to Bishop Mitchell’s family, friends and colleagues as they celebrate his incredible life and mourn his death.
