Andreescu headlines good day for Canadians at Oracle Challenger tennis

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu is through to the third round of the Oracle Challenger tennis tournament.

The 18-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., downed American Katie Volynets 6-2, 7-6 (7) on Wednesday night.

Andreescu is seeded sixth at the tournament. She will face No. 9 seed Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic on Thursday.

Also Wednesday, Brayden Schnur of Pickering, Ont., advanced to the third round by defeating American Maxime Cressy 6-2, 7-5 and Toronto's Katherine Sebov beat Sofya Zhuk of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-3.

The No. 16-seeded Schnur will face No. 3 seed Mackenzie McDonald of the U.S. in the third round. Sebov meets 12th-seeded Nicole Gibbs of the U.S. on Thursday.

Meanwhile, No. 5 seed Peter Polansky of Thornhill, Ont., lost 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to Kaichi Uchida of Japan in the second round.

Polansky fought off five match points before Uchida finally won the match.

Vancouver's Felip Peliwo and Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., have also reached the third round.
