Where two streets have one name: City looks over duplicate addresses

Packages and deliveries routinely end up in the wrong locations, meeting heard

The city of Thorold will be looking over its directory over street names after at least two duplicates have caused a headache for residents.

Coun. John Kenney told city council last night that he had heard from residents on Macartney drive in Thorold who are suffering at the hands of a similarly named location; Macartney drive.

"We have this exact same spelling of two streets in Thorold. One is a crescent, and one is a drive," said Kenny, saying that pizzas and package deliveries regularly end up in the wrong locations.

"The other problem is ambulances and fire services. I have been told it can't happen, and that they can't go to the wrong street, but I find that hard to believe."

Similar problems have stricken residents at Hansler Road, who have another similar street name routinely show up on internet searches.

City staff said that the process of renaming a street could take a few months.

Council directed staff to look over the directories after similar duplicates.

"It's getting ridiculous, and could be potentially dangerous," said Coun. Ken Sentance.
