The fence and construction equipment that’s blocked pedestrians from using the Thorold Welland Canals Recreational Trail are expected to be removed within a week.
Originally scheduled to be completed Nov. 30, “We had a few days delay due to weather, but based on current schedule the path should reopen next Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019,” Civil Engineer David Leblanc of the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation told the Thorold News Dec. 11.
During the past month, workers have been busy constructing a reinforced concrete slab and retaining wall, as well as re-positioning security fencing at the trail location to permanently store stop logs used annually by Seaway staff to de-water the Canal at Lock 7.
Due to heavy construction equipment, including excavators, graders, concrete trucks and dump trucks in the area, Leblanc explained that it was necessary to shut down the path to ensure safety at the work-site.
