More strikes to hit schools in Niagara.

A one day province wide job action by the four affiliates of the Ontario Teacher's federation next Friday will see all schools across the province closed as 200,000 teachers and education workers walk off the job.

"This is the first time since the political protest of 1997 that teachers and education workers from Ontario’s main education affiliates will all be out of their classrooms on the same day. Nearly 200,000 teachers and education workers will strike across 72 school boards, affecting nearly 5,000 schools across the province in protest of the government funding cuts to education", a press release said.

The announcement came Wednesday afternoon - a day when schools in Niagara closed as part of the rotating strike action affecting DSBN.

Negotiations between the teachers unions organizing public- and catholic school teachers have previously broken down after failure to agree on key issues.

Todays strike announcement was made in Toronto outside a hotel where education minister Stephen Lecce was to speak about preparing students for the jobs of the future.

DSBN has previously told Thorold News it is not concerned that the frequent strikes will have an effect on its curriculum.

Earlier this year the board decided to postpone the EQAO-math tests for high school students until June, as teachers have been on a work-to-rule campaign as part of the job action.
