Thorold is 1,5 months away from seeing the doors open to the city's first cannabis store.
Toronto entrepreneur Bret Unger, owner of Takeoff Cannabis told Thoroldnews.com that the grand opening will be held on April 20 - in cannabis culture sometimes heralded as a day particular to the celebration of weed.
"We are extremely excited. The store is 90 percent finished, and we are laying the final touches and awaiting some inventory and accessories," Unger said.
Since announcing last summer that his store would be opening up at the Pine St Plaza, sharing premises with Thorold's Foodland, Pine St Dental, and other businesses, Unger said the work has been ramping up in the last months to find staff.
"We interviewed about 25 people and will be hiring around 10, but I am hoping to hire more if we find that there is a need for it," Unger said, adding that the majority of the retail staff are from Thorold.
The store will feature around 750 sq ft. of retail space, where customers can explore various products.
Unger said his phone has been running hot with calls from locals who have been asking if they are open yet.
"Whenever we are there, people pop their heads in the door and ask when we will be opening up. It seems the neighbourhood is excited for the opening."
Takeoff Cannabis is one of several stores in the area who have applied with the AGCO to open up in recent months.
Grand Cannabis on Keefer Road is the second cannabis shop that is planning to open up in Thorold.
According to the stores website, the location is opening soon.
