The construction of a new rental apartment building downtown Thorold is one step closer to becoming reality after the project met no opposition a public consultation in city council on Tuesday night.

The building at Sullivan avenue and Pine St. will have four floors to house 32 rental units with 2 bed- and bathrooms, 1100+ square ft and hosting an under- and above ground parking spot.

"We are greatly encouraged after the meeting", says local realtor Serge Carpino, who is building the apartment complex via his firm, Realty Ltd. Brokerage.

"The next step is for the bylaw to be passed at the next council meeting if the city planner recommends that", Carpino continued.

After that, more administrative hoops need to be passed, but the zoning is step 1 for the project to go ahead.

City planner Paul Klassen said during the council meeting that the project had received support in several letters.

Carpino says the interest so far has been big.

"The appeal for rentals is high with people who are retired or semi-retired and that have lost the incentive to own, like people who don't want to pay property taxes or are tired of running maintenance by themselves. The building will be brand new and close to amenities. You don't even need a car", he said.

Right now, occupancy is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2021.
