Two proposed Indigenous housing projects in Niagara, including one in Thorold, have received $475,000 from the provincial and federal governments.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by officials on the site of a proposed development on Ormond Street, where Oonuhseh Niagara Native Homes are planning to build a duplex containing two units for Indigenous elders.

The non-profit housing corporation is also planning a triplex in St Catharines, with the homes on the lower floor being wheelchair accessible.

The funding will be delivered through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative, OPHI.

"Ensuring that Indigenous people have access to affordable housing that meets their needs is absolutely critical, especially during this challenging time. We look forward to continuing this vital work in collaboration with municipal, federal and Indigenous partners,” said Ontario Minister of Indigenous Affairs Greg Rickford in a statement.

Oonuseh Niagara Homes is planning to break ground at 60 Ormond Street within a year.
