Thorold among those stepping up for Alzheimer's awareness

Alzheimer's awareness is the focus of coffee breaks and other events this week

The Niagara Region is the battlefront when it comes to the fight against dementia.

With the area becoming a favourite among retirees and an aging population, this region is affected by dementia more than most.

For the past 20 years, the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region has held its annual Coffee Break campaign in support of those who live with Alzheimer’s and dementia related illnesses.

Workplaces across Niagara have committed to hosting a Coffee Break event between September and the end of December.

Cassandra Best, Manager of Fund Development for the Alzheimer Society of Niagara, told the Thorold News the annual event was its primary fundraiser but it has suffered in recent years.

She's hoping for a resurgence this year. The society is hosting its official Coffee Break campaign kick-off event at Niagara Region Headquarters this Friday morning, Sept. 20. A flag raising will take place followed by a coffee break and cheque presentation at 10 a.m.

In support of World Alzheimer's Awareness day, Saturday Sept. 21, the Brock Tower, The Peace Bridge and the Welland Bridge will be lit up in blue.

A number of businesses in Thorold have already committed to supporting the cause.

Nick Dell'Omo at Biscotti Cafe will be donating 25 cents from each cup of coffee sold on Thursdays between Sept. 19 and December 19.

Thorold Medical Pharmacy is hosting a coffee break at noon this Friday.

Cobblestone Gardens Retirement Residence held a coffee break last week and some private residents are also holding their own coffee breaks.

The Thorold Community Credit Union is hosting a coffee break on Friday, Sept. 27 at 9 a.m.

Foodland is selling the trademark coffee cup cutouts all week at checkout.

Friends of the Library will be hosting a coffee break on Oct. 23 and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church will hold one in January.
