Rumours of trouble brewing at beer store

The future of beer sales in Thorold is uncertain at this point

This week, rumours were swirling around Thorold and on social media that the Beer Store will be the next agency to join the Ministry of Transport office and the LCBO in closing up shop and leaving Thorold.

At this point, they are just rumours.

Media contact for the Beer Store, Bill Walker, told ThoroldNews, "We have no plans to close that (Thorold) store."

However, a source at Bill McLeary's office, owner of the property, would neither confirm or deny whether they will be extending the current lease.

All Beer Store outlets currently face an uncertain future as the Ford government is planning on making beer available in grocery and convenience stores.

The situation in Thorold is more clouded than in other municipalities with four possible scenarios.

First, the lease may be renewed and business will continue as usual. In the second scenario, the lease is not renewed, forcing the Beer Store to find a new location in Thorold.

Thirdly, the point may be made moot if retail beer sales become privatized and moved into grocery and convenience stores. Or, lastly, the Beer Store does indeed move out of Thorold in the future.

At this point, we can only wait and see.
