In a move announced back in February, the Thorold Branch of the RBC closed its doors today for the last time.
The closing follows moves by other banking institutions, Scotiabank and CIBC, who previously closed their Thorold branches.
Citing shrinking foot traffic and a substantial move to online banking, brick and mortar banks are dwindling in number. Recent numbers released by the Canadian Bankers Association show that 88 per cent of Canadians are now using online banking. Mobile banking is showing the largest growth among users.
The Thorold branch has merged with the one located at 344 Glendale Ave, St. Catharines and customers are enouraged to use that branch to access their accounts if needed.
In a move not offered to Thorold customers by the CIBC, RBC has pledged to keep the ATM open at the closing branch located at 52 Front St S.
The Royal Bank has operated in Thorold since it acquired the Quebec Bank in 1917. It has operated at the 52 Front Street location since the early 1960s.
