Darryl Murphy wanted to get to know his neighbours.

“I've lived in Thorold for eight years now and, given that I work in Burlington, it's challenging to get to know my neighbours beyond my own street,” said the Coldwell Banker realtor. “I tried organizing a street party last year, but didn't get a very enthusiastic response.”

His solution?

The Confederation Heights resident is hosting a community garage sale and barbecue next weekend, and encourages all area residents to get together and join him in purging unwanted household items to make some pocket cash.

“Bring all those items taking up space in your garages and closets, bring your handicrafts, bring a non-perishable food item, bring your friends, and bring your neighbours; it will be a great opportunity to meet your neighbours and have some fun,” he stated.

Where possible, Murphy said he’ll make every attempt to help transport garage sale items.

He asks that anyone who attends brings a non-perishable food item.

“We’re incorporating a food drive too, because Community Care’s cupboards are bare. They will ensure that the donations go to help Thorold” clients, he added.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 11 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and is free to participate, said Murphy.

“I am asking that people register (send me their name and email, there’s a form on the link that follows) if they’re interested in selling at the garage sale so I have an idea how many sellers we can expect.”
