Plans for an addition to Lakeview Cemetery’s mausoleum are being revealed this week, and everyone’s invited to offer input on the proposed concept design.

The new proposal from Raimondo and Associates will be unveiled this Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.

Public washrooms may be incorporated into the new facility, said Dawn Dobbie, community services coordinator at Lakeview Cemetery, although, “This is all just in the conceptual stages right now.”

Constructed of vermilion pink Canadian granite, the mausoleum’s first phase went up in October, 1986, in response to the community’s request for a facility that offered above-ground burial for their loved ones.

As crypts—for full-body burials, and niches—for cremated remains—continued to sell, a chapel and second phase were added in September, 1990, followed by an additional 266 indoor crypts and 304 niches, in the mid-1990s.

Most of the remaining available crypts are what’s known as Westminster Family crypts, which accommodate up to four caskets, said Dobbie.

The proposal, dated July 22, shows the new mausoleum on the east side of the existing two structures, containing an additional 32 single and 48 tandem crypts with “possibly 364 niches inside and 280 niches outside.”

Anyone who can’t attend the public information centre but would like to request more information, or provide feedback, can contact Curtis Dray, manager of community services, at [email protected].
