The Niagara Regional Police Service By-Law Enforcement & Licencing Unit continues to be involved with investigations pertaining to the illegal personal transportation industry throughout the Niagara Region.
The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to public safety and will continue with enforcement measures pertaining to the illegal personal transportation industry. The public is reminded to take all precautions when using transportation services and to utilize properly licenced and properly insured companies.
Both Taxi and Transportation Network Company (TNC) owners have a responsibility to ensure their drivers receive proper training and education.
The use of unlicenced - illegal transportation services place the passengers at risk as drivers backgrounds are not vetted for criminality or past driving behavior.
Passengers face further risk as unlicenced - illegal transportation services do not possess the required in commercial insurance coverage in the event of a collision.
Different requirements exist under the Regional Municipality of Niagara Police Services Board Licencing By-Law 381-2018 for companies that fall under motor vehicles for hire for transportation where the passenger(s) have control over their destinations.
The public should be aware that only Taxi companies are allowed to use methods such as a dispatcher, an electronic software application or hail a ride and accept cash payments.
A Transportation Network Company is not allowed to accept payments, and a driver shall not commence the trip until the passenger has provided electronic acceptance of payment of such fare.
