Local cat turns 12, celebrates with party

Tigger is part customer service representative and part night security at store.

Turn up the meowsic and start the pawty!

Saturday marks the annual celebration for one of the few four-legged retail workers in Thorold.

Tigger, the orange tabby can be seen stalking the aisles of Pet Valu at the Pine Street shopping center every day (and night) with his strikingly similar cat companion Gus.

They are part customer service representatives and part night security for the store, that has been doing annual drives for Niagara Falls Community Cats and the Animal Assistance Society of Niagara for 8 years.

That was when Tigger arrived in Thorold after he was found roaming the streets of Niagara falls.

"He just had such a great personality that we decided to keep him in the store", manager Joe Krawchuk told Thorold News.

Since then, Tigger has been the face of several promotional items, from coffee mugs to calendars and has closer to 1000 followers on social media.

Now, Krawchuck and staff are preparing to greet locals to the store on Saturday between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. to celebrate Tigger's 12th birthday, with raffle ticket prizes ranging from a scratching post or dog bed to baskets with treats and other items.

Donations are accepted at the store throughout the month.

The event will also feature baked goods, party raffles, face painting and more.

When asked why Gus, the second store cat, did not receive a similar celebration, store staff said his grumpy personality has kept him from the spotlight.

Tigger was sleeping at the time of Thorold News visit to the store and was not available for comment.
