Today is the deadline to register for the Intergenerational Bocce Tournament, to be held at the bocce courts at C.E. Grose Park in honour of National Grandparents Day on Sept. 8.

The City of Thorold and its active Age-Friendly Committee are co-hosting the event. There is no fee to enter the tournament, but a donation bin will be on site, collecting donations for Community Care.

The intent is for grandparents to play with their grandchildren, but according to organizer Diana D’Intino, “Even if you’re not a grandparent, it’s just a way to have fun. Teams don’t have to be made up of family members, but each team needs to have four members, and one of those has to be age 55+, one has to be younger than 20, and the other two can be any age.”

Also, one of those four people has to be a resident of Thorold.

“There will be an award for team spirit, so what you lack in skill you can make up for in team spirit,” D’Intino added. “We encourage you to use your imagination,” whether team members wear matching t-shirts, or find an alternate way to show their enthusiasm.

“And that will be judged by the other teams.”

Team check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. The first round of games will begin at 11 a.m. The concession stand will be open, and there is a rain date of Sept. 15.

Participants can register online at www.thorold.ca or fill out registration forms, available at the following locations: Thorold City Hall, the Thorold Public Library, or A Yellow Flower Basket, at 50 Front Street North.

C. E. Grose Park is located at 48 McMann Drive.
