Thorold councilor Jim Handley says he's taking a medical leave of absence from his role in city hall, citing issues with his health and 'legal/city issues' with his political post.

The statement was posted around 2 p.m in the local Facebook group 'Thorold Municipal Politics Priorities and Concerns for Citizens Page', founded by Handley himself, where he often comments on council affairs, gathers support, and makes updates about his work.

Handley said in the post that he will be on leave until the issues he is currently facing and until he can be 'healthy, open and transparent'.

Handley couldn't be reached for comment on Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Terry Ugulini declined to comment on Handley's statement.

It is not clear if a formal request has come to the city.
