As many as around 100 students connected to the outbreak of COVID-19 among students living at the Brock University residence have now been isolated as Public Health continues to track new cases who might have gotten infected, said Dr. Mustafa Hirji during a media briefing on Monday.
It was just before the weekend that Brock and Public Health in a joint statement said that 12 cases of the virus had been found among students living on residence. The discovery followed what was described as 'social activities' and revolves around individuals in student housing.
"We are following up with all contacts," said Hirji, stating contacts of people who had tested positive, and people who had been at the same events were being contacted and asked to isolate.
"It is quite a large number of people. It is in the high double-digits, if not triple digits that needed to be isolated because of this outbreak."
Hirji said Public Health is monitoring the outbreak closely, and are expecting some of the cases that had shown up in contact tracing to eventually test positive.
Echoing previous weeks' statements, Dr. Hirji said the trend in Niagara continues to look negative, with overall more cases showing up in Niagara and surrounding regions, while mobility data reveals that residents are socializing and going out to establishments and for recreations in a much larger extent now, comparable to last fall.
"We are back to where we were through the fall, when we were in 'Orange or Yellow'. What we are seeing now is that restrictions are not helping to keep socialization down."
