Grandchildren will be given a chance to bond with their grandparents while enjoying a free swim and movie night in Thorold.

The inter-generational event will kick off with a free swim in the heated Thorold City Pool, from 5 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 14, followed by a free screening of the Disney film, Aladdin, in the adjacent TCAG gym.

Showtime runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and all children must be accompanied at both the swim and movie portions by a grandparent, adult aged 55 or older, or in the absence of one of the aforementioned, a parent.

Folding chairs will be available, but participants are advised to bring their own blankets, drinks and snacks.

Some old-fashioned quality bonding between grandchildren and their grandparents--as well as celebrating Thoroldites of all ages--was the goal behind the Thorold Age-Friendly committee’s decision to host the event.

According to committee chair Jean D’Amelio Swyer, “The swim/movie came about from a brainstorming meeting” among Age-Friendly volunteers, and with the approval and support of city staff, including community services manager Curtis Dray and Thorold pool staff, city clerk Donna Delvecchio, deputy clerk Joanne Goulet, and chief librarian Joanne DeQuadros, as well as the support of staff from the Thorold Community Activities Group.

Other volunteers have agreed to set up chairs for the movie in the TCAG gym, she said.

The team approach makes it possible to “make things happen with minimal cost,” she added.

“The event is a result of the community coming together and with the support of the city, both financially and in-kind.”

The city will provide the free swim, along with staff support and assistance, while the TCAG will provide the free gym to host the movie.

An intergenerational bocce tournament is also being planned for Sept. 8.
