First Horticulture Day for Thorold (5 photos)

Thorold Garden Club members gave two green thumbs up while celebrating their 90th anniversary Saturday

Nine generations of dedicated volunteers have made Thorold more naturally vibrant, lush and scenic, through the use of their green thumbs, community spirit, and plant life.

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Thorold Garden Club (formerly the Thorold Horticultural Club), Town Crier Tony Vandermaas officially proclaimed June 15 as Thorold’s first Horticulture Day.

Helping to beautify Thorold is its main goal, said club president Leslie Daniels.

She and Mayor Terry Ugulini cut the ribbon on the revamped Richmond Street Parkette on Saturday, using garden shears.

Commending the club for the “great work you do in our community,” Ugulini said, “We hope to make this an annual tradition. I want to thank you for the work you did, particularly Scott Walton, who put this project together” as the city's gardener.

As Thorold’s downtown streetscape undergoes a major makeover in the next few years, “We will need your input,” Ugulini said, addressing Garden Club members.

In addition to enhancing schools, parks, and countless public places in the city throughout the years, the club has also encouraged local children to grow plants, and advised city staff about optimum use of plant life in their upcoming re-design of the Battle of Beaverdams Park.

Marg Tanaszi, District Director of the Ontario Horticultural Association, congratulated the Thorold club for its longevity, and said there are 2,800 members province-wide.

The Thorold club hosts regular meetings featuring several knowledgeable speakers at Holy Rosary Church Hall, and will receive official recognition from the city at the Annual Rose and Flower Show this Wednesday, June 19, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The Hall is located at 35 Queen Street South.
