Firefighters host annual turkey draws (4 photos)

Both Thorold South and Port Robinson fire stations held their annual turkey draws in support of their favourite charities

Volunteers firefighters at Station #2 in Thorold South and Station #3 in Port Robinson each hosted one of the most popular and well-attended fundraisers over the past week. The Thorold South station held its draw on Dec. 7, and Port Robinson on Dec. 14.

The annual turkey raffle has become a Christmas tradition putting turkeys and ham on the tables of lucky draw winners as well as filling the charitable coffers of the respective stations.

“We have draws for 25 turkeys, 25 Foodland vouchers for turkeys and ten $100 cash draws,” said Port Robinson volunteer Rose Terreberry. “The money raised goes to charities and the Thorold cadets."

Co-organizers Shaun Boulet and Jacob Bartlet run the turkey draw. Boulet noted the funds raised are also used for a long-running tradition in Port Robinson.

“For about 60 years volunteers have donned a Santa suit on Christmas eve and delivered candy and fire prevention tips to every home in Port Robinson,” he explained.

A week earlier Station #2 Fire Hall in Thorold South was filled to capacity with supporters eager to win one of 40 turkeys and 20 hams for the holidays.

Members there also earmark funds for charities they support such as the station bursary, kids Halloween party, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Goodwill and other charities noted volunteer firefighter Dave Thomson.
