The Thorold firefighters have thrown their support behind James Symons and the Niagara Toolbox Project.

Volunteer firefighter Steve Radcliffe told the Thorold News, “I reached out to James to see if there was a way the firefighters could help out. We do a lot of community service and I thought it would be a great initiative to get involved in.”

In 2017, Symons began the Toolbox Niagara project, which packages up essential items, like hygiene products, socks, mitts and scarves, after he realized there was a lack of support to men who are experiencing homelessness or poverty. This Christmas, the project will deliver its 1,000th package to someone in need. (See previous articles here, and here.)

“James has been great supplying posters and bins. So far, we’ve had some great donations and hopefully we’ll fill some more bins in the next couple of weeks,” said Radcliffe, who’s been a firefighter for six years.

All four Thorold fire stations are accepting donations. All the members are bringing in donations and the public is also encouraged to drop by the stations to donate. At Station 1, visitors can ring the doorbell and the bin is located right inside the front door.

City hall and the arena are also accepting donations, as is the Thorold Community Activities Group at 131 Richmond St.

“The response has been great so far with the bins in each firehall for the past two weeks. Most are almost full so we’ll be getting more bins for each hall,” said Radcliffe.
