DSBN hires human rights advisor

Will work to implement equity plan

DSBN has hired a Human Rights Advisor.

The school board said in a statement on Wednesday that it had appointed Maryam Safdar Ali to the role, that is intended to implement the boards' 'Equity Audit Action Plan,' as well as 'continue to build a culture of respect for the principles of human rights and equity within the DSBN.'

Safdar Ali, is a lawyer with a double major in Human Rights and Equity studies, and Law and Society from York University.

“Education and awareness are essential. Canada is such a diverse nation, and by increasing our understanding of diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and equity, I think we can truly succeed towards building a society that celebrates the individual as an individual, as well as celebrates the whole society,” said Safdar Ali in a statement from DSBN.

She will begin with the board in March.
