Drivers approaching Thorold’s new subdivision, Merritt Meadows, are asked to proceed with caution when exiting the Merritt Road ramp off of Hwy. 406 South.
The problem stems from drivers attempting to make a left-hand turn from the ramp onto Grisdale Road, Coun. Anthony Longo reported at a recent council meeting.
Calling Merritt “a very high-speed road,” he added that conditions can be dangerous when leaving the ramp and immediately turning left into Merritt Meadows, and suggested that city staff “reach out to the Region and have them lower that speed limit, and do something about that left-hand lane on Grisdale.”
According to Public Works and Community Services director Geoff Holman, “We have notified the Region and they were organizing the date for the speed monitoring. The Region is also planning to extend Merritt (Road) all the way to Rice Road. We need to look at some way to calm the traffic in that area, and advise the police” that it’s potentially dangerous, Holman added.
“It’s always helpful to have a resolution from council to move it to the top of the pile” of traffic calming requests, he said. Holman said he’ll recommend that Niagara Transportation Services staff study that section of road and “calming measures to make the turning lane safe.”
Merritt Meadows is located west of Hwy. 406, near the border of Welland.
