Deep roots keep Nick Moss on top of the blues world

Setting the primer for what should be an explosive Canal Bank Shuffle Blues Festival (CBS), the Nick Moss band featuring Dennis Gruenling took the Holy Rosary Hall stage by storm Thursday night

The multiple Blues Music Award-winning Nick Moss band from Chicago stopped in Thorold on a tour that will take them to Europe this week. That tour prevented them from appearing at the Canal Bank Shuffle Blues Festival kicking off this Thursday, so they agreed to participate in an impromptu launch party.

Moss was barely 20 years old when his career took off while playing guitar with the legendary Jimmy Rogers band. A few short years later, he began his own band and hasn't looked back. Heralded as one of the top blues acts touring today, they received accolades from the Blues Music Awards in Memphis in 2018. The band was nominated as "Band of the Year" and Moss won the "Best Traditional Blues Male" artist award, while Gruenling took the "Best Instrumentalist: Harmonica" trophy.

Beginning Thursday, Oct. 17, international and local talent--in the form of 25 bands performing 29 shows--will descend upon Thorold for the 18th Annual Canal Bank Shuffle. Shows begin Thursday at Holy Rosary Hall and run through the weekend at the Canadian Corps, Legion Branch 17, Donnelly's Pub, Biscotti Cafe, Karma Kameleon and Holy Rosary Hall.
