City council is making a renewed effort to get more information on the cost and logistics of the 2021 Canada Summer Games facility.

In a motion moved by councillor Jim Handley, council agreed to again ask the Canada Games Committee for a tender document, outlining the final bid for the massive project on Sir Isaac Brock Way, on the border between Thorold and St Catharines, including payment terms, and what timeline the contractor has set out.

A similar motion was passed in December, but on Tuesday night council heard that city staff met with a representative for the games, but did not get any answers.

"They were not clear what we were asking for", said chief administrative officers Manoj Dilwara, adding that the committee had indicated that the procurement process of a contractor was confidential.

Councillor Handley said that if the numbers are not released to council he would move forward with a freedom of information request.

"The procurement policies are done now. There is nothing in the act that says those documents are not public", he said, adding that the taxpayers have a right to know the details given the amount of public funding.

Council has previously heard that the project's total cost is $98.8 million with 40 percent coming from federal funding, 33 percent from provincial funding, and “27 percent left to make up” from various community partners.

The city of Thorold decided this summer to partner with the games, tentatively investing 7 million dollars in the project, that is also receiving $29 million in federal funding.

The games are held Aug. 6 - 21, 2021.
